Underride Accidents
An underride accident involves the back end of a trailer usually attached to an 18 wheeler truck. Due to the relative height of a trailer, and the low front end of the average coupe or sedan, there is high potential for what is called an underride accident. This occurs when a small vehicle rear-ends an 18 wheeler with a trailer on the back, the small vehicle will crash and slide underneath the trailer because of its height. The height of the back end of a trailer is usually just high enough so that it will scrape the hood of a sedan or coupe, and take off the base of the windshield and anything above, generally all the way back past the driver and front passenger's seats.
Modern safety standards demand that there be a safety mechanism on the back end of all trailers to prevent underride accidents. The mechanism is essentially a large reinforced steel bar that will prevent a rear end accident from going any further than 3 or 4 feet under the trailer. Unfortunately some of these safety bars, even though they meet lawful United States safety standards, are not strong enough to prevent an underride accident, depending on the velocity of both vehicles involved.
